It’s hard to fault the DrayTek Vigor2865ac, and its flexible yet high performance feature set is a must-have for many businesses.

For the Draytek Vigor2865 series connectivity is key, and it sports both a WAN port and an ADSL2+/VDSL modem. Even better, it supports the latest VDSL 35b Supervectoring spec. For those who don’t live and breathe modems, 35b allows DSL speeds of up to 300 Mbps. As a comparison, the older Vigor2862 supported VDSL 30a, which supported up to 200 Mbps, while many modems only do 100 Mbps. The 2865 also has 5 Gigabit LAN ports, but beyond that comes in a variety of models – the most basic with no Wi-Fi, VoIP or LTE. The 2865ac (as tested) adds 802.11ac spec Wi-Fi, while the 2865Vac has Wi-Fi and VoIP. The 2865L has a built-in LTE modem, and the 2865Lac adds Wi-Fi, but no VOIP. If you want both VOIP and LTE, the Vigor2865Vac can add two 4G modems via USB.

That’s a lot of options, but gives a lot of flexibility for businesses to choose what they need, and match it with the hardware they already have. With LAN, WAN, LTE and Wireless WAN connections, it is possible to have up to six sources of internet, configured to work together, act as backups, or kick in when the extra bandwidth is needed. You also get comprehensive firewall, security controls and quality of service options.

The Vigor2865 series needs to be able to handle all these features, so includes hardware acceleration, and provides 800 Mbps of NAT and 130Mbps of SSL-VPN throughput – 1.6x and 2.9x faster respectively, compared to the older Vigor2862. You also get 60k NAT sessions, which is suitable for large networks with 50+ devices. The router also supports 32 VPN tunnels, and 16 SSL-VPN, plus 16 VLANs and 8 LAN Subnets. The AC spec Wi-Fi gives 400 Mbps on 2.4GHz, and 867 Mbps on 5GHz. In testing the Wi-Fi gave great results at 623 Mbps up close, and 316 Mbps at 10m range.

Right, so all that adds up to a modem router that gives small businesses loads of options for internet and network management. The actual DrayTek web interface is dense, but well laid out, and there are loads of support options and articles available online.

Where Draytek devices really shine is the ability to manage a network of compatible Vigor gear, such as switches and wireless access points. This is possible directly via the Vigor2865 web interface, but Draytek also has a software management solution – VigorACS. This TR-069 compliant software provides a central interface to manage compatible Draytek hardware, such as access points, routers and switches. It’s a key feature for larger businesses, where the time savings alone can be significant.

The inclusion of 35B Supervectoring support is important for VDSL connected businesses, though this same option can be found on lower end Draytek routers. Where the Vigor2865 really shines is the hardware acceleration and network management options, which are critical for companies with larger or more complex networks. We also appreciate the wide range of 2865 Series models available, but it does mean you need to carefully match the models to your specific needs.
