In our last video we discussed replacing the router that the ISP supplied to connect to the NBN service, if it didn’t do everything we needed it to, and what to do to retain the existing phone service, which was now locked to the ISP’s supplied router instead of plugged into the old copper phone line system.

In this video I’ll go through the configuration of the DrayTek router and placing the ISP’s supplied router in the DMZ to continue using it for the Voice over IP service, so we don’t lose the phone number.

In our last video we discussed the NBN multi technology mix and the different routers needed for each type of nbn if the router, or gateway if you prefer, that the ISP bundled with the service didn’t do everything that a customer might need it to.

While swapping the router out for a more advanced one is generally fairly straight forward, there is one issue where it can get a bit tricky, and that’s when we want to retain the same telephone service, now provided by the ISP.

In this video we discuss the basics of swapping out the ISP supplied router with a more advance DrayTek router while retaining the existing telephone service provided by the ISP.

One of the most common enquiries we receive is:

“I'd like a router to connect to the NBN. Which one do you recommend?”

The first problem with that question is that the NBN isn’t just the NBN. It’s actually 7 physically different types of internet services using different technologies grouped under one umbrella called the NBN Multi Technology MIX, or MTM. Each technology uses a different type of cable and broadband Internet technology for at least part of the distance to connect a house to the national broadband network. Even wireless and satellite connections may be the case for many people.

In this video we’ll take a look at the NBN Multi Technology MIX and go through the different routers needed to suit each different type of NBN connection.
